Bhajans, which are devotional songs typically sung in praise of God or spiritual themes, play a significant role in schools, especially in those that emphasize holistic education and values-based learning. Bhajans introduce students to the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of a region or religion. They help students connect with traditional values and cultural practices.
Singing bhajans can promote spiritual growth, providing students with a sense of peace, connection, and purpose. It introduces them to the concepts of devotion, gratitude, and mindfulness. The lyrics of many bhajans often contain teachings about love, compassion, honesty, and respect. Regular engagement with these values through music helps in internalizing them.
Mr Mahesh, the Music teacher of Ettimadai campus explained how bhajan sessions should be held. The following things were instructed to students:
1. Dhyayamo
2. Amma’s Ashtotharam (Birthday students are asked to do archana for each Ashtotharam)
3. Amma’s Namavali
4. Bhajans
5. Aarthi
6. Shanti Mantra
Bhajans encourage students to reflect on their behaviour and actions, promoting a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct. Singing bhajans can be a calming and soothing activity, helping to reduce stress and anxiety among students. Overall, bhajans can be a powerful tool in schools to nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient, but also culturally, morally, and spiritually aware.
